Game For Toads

The Sussex pub game of toads

Toad in the Hole, usually shortened to Toads, is a traditional Sussex pub game played for centuries in village inns across the South Downs. Players take turns lobbing heavy brass discs (the “toads”) at a lead-topped table, aiming for the hole in the middle. Land one in the hole and you score two; land one on the top and you score one.

It’s a slow, deliberate game, perfect with a pint, and it’s still played competitively in leagues around Lewes, Brighton, and the surrounding villages. This site is a small home for keeping the game alive: rules, history, and where to find a table.
